Tap is a fun rhythmical dance form that helps build the students co-ordination, timing and stamina. Learning a mixture of set technical exercises and musical appreciation the student will progress through the graded syllabus following the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) examination board. Once the graded exercises have be taught and the correct technique and knowledge has been achieved the students are then given the opportunity to enter the examination and progress through the grades. Graded classes start from as young as 4 and progresses to vocational level.
Within the graded classes it is very important to allow the student to explore their own choreography helping them embrace dance improvisation, whether this is through creative movement tasks, rhythmical appreciation or asking them to assist with ideas for a dance movement. By adapting and introducing the idea of choreography and improvisation this helps broaden the students dance knowledge, as they explore movement outside their set grade.
Music appreciation is taught through the use of note values, time signatures and counting. It is taught the same in both tap and modern. It is developed and progressed throughout the grades growing each student’s ability to count the music/steps, identify the style of music, their movement range, as well as broadening their dance performance and movement quality.
