Modern Theatre Dance combines a range of movement that teaches knowledge and understanding within dance technique, musicality & rhythm, body awareness and performance. This is all explored through different styles such as blues, jazz, lyrical and musical theatre.
The classes follow the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) Modern Theatre graded syllabus, helping to develop the students dance performance and technique. With a mixture of set exercises and teacher arrangements the student learn both style & strength allowing them to progress through the grades becoming confident dancers. Graded classes start from as young as 4 and progresses to vocational level.
Within the graded class it is very important to allow the student to explore their own choreography helping them embrace dance improvisation, whether this is through creative movement tasks, rhythmical appreciation or asking them to assist with ideas for a dance movement. By adapting and introducing the idea of choreography and improvisation this helps broaden the students dance knowledge, as they explore movement outside their set grade.
Music appreciation is taught through the use of note values, time signatures and counting. It is taught the same in both tap and modern. It is developed and progressed throughout the grades growing each student’s ability to count the music/steps, identify the style of music, develop their movement range, as well as broadening their dance performance and movement quality.
